About the project

In Colombia, 7 out of 10 children and adolescents with disabilities are not enrolled in school (DANE, 2020). The route explains to families and caregivers what to do at each moment of school life, in four stations: access and presence, participation and retention, promotion, and support networks.

With DEICOMPANY, I did the editorial design and illustration for the entire toolkit: a 94-page Easy-to-Read booklet, five infographics (one per station and a summary), a two-pager for decision-makers and a protocol for the teams that take the route out to the regions. One visual system ties them together: each station has its own color, recognizable across every piece, and each infographic shows at its foot which station the family is at (You are here).

Accessibility is at the heart of the project. The text was adapted into Easy-to-Read by Margarita Mejía Umaña and validated by people with disabilities, families, INCI, INSOR, ASDOWN and LICA. The design supports that adaptation: short sentences, one idea per line, each illustration with its written description beside it, Keep in mind! boxes, a glossary with icons and a digital PDF tagged for screen readers.
